Mary H. Plummer began her teaching career in Washington, D.C.  In 1914 she was appointed to teach first grade at the Douglass-Simmons Elementary School, and moved to the Randall Junior High School as an English teacher in 1924.  On Sept 1, 1928 she became the first Principal of Francis Junior High School, a position she maintained until she retired in 1947.

As a testament to her impact in Washington, D.C., the Mary H. Plummer Elementary School was named in her honor. Today it serves around 250 students and is located at 4601 Texas Avenue, S.E.
