Born in 1891, Maloney was the daughter of Edlow A. Townes and Letitia Polina Coleman Townes.
She attended M. Street High School, Miner Normal School and Howard University. In 1917 she moved to Tory, North Carolina where she was appointed to teach at the Peabody Academy. In 1922 she moved back to Washington DC to accept a position at Shaw Junior High School. A year later she married a former classmate from Howard, Dr. Charles Franklin Maloney.
Not only did Maloney become a charter member of Beta Zeta, her sister—Geneva Townes Turner— also became a prominent early member of the sorority.
